Stay with me on this one… It might not seem an obvious choice for an educational app, but Fruit Ninja formed the basis for one of the most successful and enjoyable maths units I have taught.
The premise was simple – a hypotheses that boys are better than girls at Fruit Ninja. The children were immediately engaged – both boys and girls desperate to prove or disprove the hypotheses. In terms of time, the use of the app was minimal – one game of Fruit Ninja per child with scores recorded, but the crucial fact was that it generated data that could be analysed, prompted questions and kept the children interested for days.
Of course, it doesn’t have to be Fruit Ninja, any game which generates a score could be used, and it doesn’t have to be based on boys and girls. This idea can also be very easily modified for different age groups and levels of attainment.
